Plant a Career in Horticulture! Most people, including students studying horticulture, have a limited view of careers available in the horticulture industry. The WSNLA Careers task force is taking steps to change this. Next month industry representatives will be attending career fairs & networking events at WSU, University of Idaho and UW to promote horticulture careers and connect students and emerging professionals with your WSNLA career fair listing. If you have openings, be sure to post them now! It's free for members. ($10 for CPHs & ecoPROs. $35 non members) 

However, the work doesn't stop there. Now is the time for our industry to tell its story - to reshape society's perception of horticulture careers through real stories told directly from professionals doing the work everyday.  The task force is working with a video production company to develop 3 videos that will take center stage in a social media campaign. But, we need more content to amplify this message and shine a light on the wide array of horticulture careers.  That means we need you - here's how you can help:

Take the Next Step
Become a Certified Professional Horticulturist in 2022

 

WSNLA is excited to announce the return of the Certified Professional Horticulturist exam. Based on input from industry professionals, changes have been made to the format making it easier and more accessible for you to earn your Certified Professional Horticulturist certification!

The exam will now be offered in two parts on separate dates. The general knowledge and landscape practices sections will be offered virtually three times a year, and the plant identification section will continue to be offered in person, providing you an opportunity to see, touch and smell the plants onsite at regionally identified locations. You determine which dates work best for you. Plant identification does not have to be taken first. Keep in mind that you are not eligible to complete certification until you have passed both parts of the exam.

Member Rate: Plant ID: $50   |  General Knowledge/Landscape Practices: $40

Non Member Rate: Plant ID: $90  |  General Knowledge/Landscape Practices: $70

Part I: Plant Identification Section - In Person

Register for March 8 in Mount Vernon  
Register for July 19 in Woodinville


In this section, you will be asked to identify 40 live nursery samples by their botanical and common name. The plant samples will be nursery grown stock in containers or B&B. For eight of these samples you will have to give more information. It will include 10-year height under normal growing conditions (<1’, <6’, <10’, >10’,>20’, >35’), blooming time as two months (Jan-Feb, Feb-Mar, etc.) and color, best exposure, and if the plant is evergreen, semi-evergreen, or deciduous.  After this section, the proctors will go over the plants so you will have some idea as to how well you did.

 

The plants chosen for the Plant Identification portion are selected from the CPH Plant List, which is included with the Certified Professional Horticulturist study materials.


Results: The test will be graded by the proctors and WSNLA staff and you will be notified by e mail of your results within 1 week.

 

 

PART II: General Horticulture Knowledge
& Landscape Practices - Virtual
March  |  July |  October - Dates to be announced soon


General Knowledge: Includes 100 multiple choice questions taken from information in the Sustainable Gardening manual available through OSU and from Naming of Plants study material from WSNLA. The goal is to test your understanding of horticulture on a variety of topics. Chapters that you will be tested on are: Botany, Soils and Fertilizers, Basic Entomology, Plant Disease, Diagnosing Plant Problems, Lawns, IPM, Weed Management, and Pruning.

 

Landscape Practices: Includes 50 multiple choice questions related to landscape design and the installation and care of ornamental plants. Material is from the Sustainable Gardening manual chapters: Sustainable Landscape Design, Woody Landscape Plants, Herbaceous Ornamental Plants, Pruning, and Water Quality. The second part of this section consists of a sample landscape design plan and 22 questions where you will choose the plant best suited for a particular location on the plan. The choice is based on the type of plant requested, sun/shade requirements and plant size at maturity. Note that design creativity and visual appeal are not considered.

Results: Upon completion of this section, you will receive immediate results.

POLLINATOR SERIES: Native Bees & the Native Plants that Help Them Thrive.  The social European honey bee gets the spotlight but our native bees live completely differently. Understanding native bee life cycle and behavior can improve bee habitat in our garden, restoration, and landscape designs. Includes tips on what to do and what to avoid and also covers pollination effectiveness in order to advocate for why bee diversity is vital. PNW native plants useful to pollinators, and that are relatively easy to grow in a nursery and maintain in a landscape, will be highlighted. This session will include some tips for planning a pollinator planting, growing plants from seed, and helpful informational resources.
