This work experience gave me a glimpse of the impacts of climate change and pest resistance and what breeders and scientists are doing to combat the issues facing one of the staple crops of the world (Wheat). I aspire to help find ecological solutions to our global food security crisis.

EMILY BURKE
Fred Palmer Scholarship
Award: $1500
School: Edmonds College
Field of Study: Horticulture, Landscape Design, Associate Degree
Anticipated Graduation: May 2022
Career Ambitions: So far, my horticulture education has taught me to use plants for beauty and purpose in the landscape. I want my designs to influence and awaken people to the simple and complex wonders of the PNW native flora, because the earth, animals and people need them.

LUCILLE EWONIUK
The Walters Family Scholarship
Award: $1500
School: Lake Washington Institute of Technology, Kirkland
Field of Study: Environmental Horticulture
Anticipated Graduation: March 2022
Career Ambitions: There are many aspects of horticulture that are fascinating. I’ve only completed one of four quarters so far, so it’s a little early to decide which direction I want to go within this industry. I know for sure that I want to grow all kinds of plants, and watch them from start to finish. The idea of farming and agriculture sounds interesting, and being able to effectively produce your own food is a skill that is priceless. Then there is a the science nerd in me that is curious about tissue culture, and all the aspects of propagation.

MICHELLE GASPAIRE
Junkoh Harui Scholarship
Award: $1000
School: Edmonds College
Field of Study: Ornamental Horticulture, Sustainable Landscape Management
Anticipated Graduation: Fall 2021
Career Ambitions: I am very interested in possibly working with a resort and being in charge of all the seasonal changes on the grounds, managing everything that needs to be done and working with the chef on growing what the restaurant might need from the greenhouse. I also would like to continue my outreach goals by working with domestic violence shelters, to grow their own food and to help get their kids excited about playing in the dirt.

EMILY HALL
Ray Holmberg Scholarship
Award: $1500
School: Edmonds College
Field of Study: Ornamental Horticulture/Nursery & Greenhouse
Anticipated Graduation: Spring 2023
Career Ambitions: My long-term education goal is to get a master’s degree in botany and be able to partake in various plant research projects. I firmly believe that having a solid foundation of plant knowledge and care will be vital for career and education goals.

JEREMY C JONES
Leno Bassett Scholarship
Award: $1500
School: Lake Washington Institute of Technology, Kirkland
Field of Study: Environmental Horticulture
Anticipated Graduation: August 2021
Career Ambitions: The LWTech Environmental Horticulture program has provided an education foundation for my initial goals of earning an internship and obtaining an entry level position in the field; including: Landscape Revitalization in Urban Communities, Permaculture Design, Public Gardens Worker, Habitat Restoration Specialist, Nursery Operations Technician, and Educational Outreach Professional with a focus on promoting the environmental and plant sciences.

MEGAN REID
WaFLORA Scholarship
Award: $2000
School: Washington State University
Field of Study: Organic and Sustainable Agriculture
Anticipated Graduation: May 2023
Career Ambitions: My career goals are to become an agricultural educator of organic and sustainable agriculture, so that I can share my passion of agriculture to all generations. In the 1920s 27% of the workforce was made of up people in the agricultural industry, but as of today, that number is less than 2%. If this number continues to drop and our population continues to rise, we will not be able to sustain ourselves.

GAVIN HANK SAHLI
Van Well Scholarship & Herbert & Marion Frost Scholarship
Award: $1500
School: Walla Walla Community College
Field of Study: Agricultural Soil Science
Anticipated Graduation: June 2022
Career Ambitions: My future goals consists of graduating from college with a greater understanding of agriculture, business and sciences. I plan to expand my knowledge of nursery trees and orchard farming. Though we have been working diligently with local health authorities and our facilities to develop a safe action plan for a return to events, the current climate of the pandemic is not conducive to the operation of consumer trade shows in the city of Seattle at this time. As you are well aware, this event is unlike any other in the Northwest. A full year of planning and preparation is necessary to bring an event of this magnitude to life every February. In the end, we count ourselves lucky that we were able to produce our 2020 show and will only need to skip one year.

The Northwest Flower & Garden Festival will return in 2022 and is set to be held February 9-13.

We appreciate your patience during this difficult time and look forward to the day when we can once again deliver the Northwest Flower & Garden Festival to our loyal exhibitors, partners, sponsors, and the thousands of attendees who look forward to this event every year.

Sincerely,

Jeff Swenson
Show Manager
Northwest Flower Garden Festival

Garden Centers Are Your Essential Partner for Growing Food at Home. Here’s How to Shop:

Your local independent garden center is an essential community source providing you access to healthy, affordable food to grow at home. As an essential part of your community, garden centers are taking the required steps to serve you safely and protect their staff. With warmer weather in the forecast, here’s what you should know about shopping your local garden center during this time of social distancing:

1) KNOW BEFORE YOU GO. Please visit your local garden center’s website, Facebook page or call before you go to verify their operating guidelines. Some have adopted modified shopping experiences, such as shopping by appointment only, call in or online orders only, or may have adjusted their open hours and payment options.

2) CURBSIDE & DELIVERY SERVICES. Submit your order in advance and enjoy curbside pick-up. For your convenience, some garden centers are offering delivery services direct to your home. With these services in high demand, be sure to place your order well in advance. This will allocate time for processing and for your preferred pick up or delivery arrival.

3) IN-PERSON SHOPPING. Create a list and plan to shop efficiently. Face coverings are encouraged and so is limiting your touching to items you are purchasing. Now is not the time to stroll the garden center for inspiration. Please be mindful of the 6-foot social distancing requirement, both with customers and staff members. Landscape plans or photos for plant, disease or pest ID should be emailed. If you’re not feeling well, please stay home. Garden centers will be ready to serve you when you’re feeling better.

4) EMBRACE YOUR SPACE! Spending time in your garden and outdoors has proven mental and physical health benefits, including reducing stress levels, generating happiness, building communities, providing exercise and enhanced learning opportunities. The benefits of gardening are endless!!

Whether your seeking locally sourced seeds and veggie starts, soil and supplies, or healthy plants and trees for your yard or balcony, garden centers are ready to garden with you. Plant Something WA!

WASHINGTON and COLUMBUS, OH – April 11, 2019 – The Green Industry Research Consortium, with funding support from the Horticultural Research Institute (HRI), is launching the National Green Industry Survey this month. This represents the seventh time that this survey has been conducted since 1989. The purpose of the survey is to document trends in production, marketing, and retailing practices in the U.S. Green Industry.

The Horticultural Research Institute’s mission is to direct, fund, promote, and communicate horticultural research. Supporting research that measures the industry’s economic contributions and documents industry trends is another example of how HRI helps advance the green industry and fulfill its core vision.

"This is the 30th year that our research team has conducted this national study, so it is special for us to commemorate this significant milestone. But more importantly, the study has been the steady source of information that is not collected by any other entity and has served the industry in so many capacities,” states Dr. Charlie Hall, research member of the Green Industry Research Consortium. “The National Green Industry Survey also provides much of the needed data for our economic impact study which is important in providing our industry trade associations with the ammunition they need to affect state and national policymaking affecting the future of the green industry."

Craig Regelbrugge, AmericanHort Senior Vice President of Industry Advocacy & Research, concurs. “The results of this survey enable our AmericanHort advocacy team to educate Members of Congress, their staff, and other federal policymakers on our industry’s role, importance, and impact. Decision makers and influencers are more likely to support our policy goals when they understand our industry’s true impact on jobs and the economy, as well as human health and well-being, strong communities, and the environment.”

HRI encourages every business that receives the survey to participate. The survey is distributed via mail and email (when available) to randomly selected wholesale and retail firms throughout the U.S. Participation is voluntary, anonymous, and confidential. If you would like to participate and do not receive a survey, contact the research team below:

Box Tree Moth Findings Confirmed in Canada

WASHINGTON and COLUMBUS, OH – March 8, 2019 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed that box tree moth (BTM) was indeed found in three separate residential landscapes in Etobicoke, Ontario, a Toronto neighborhood in fall 2018. CFIA plans to assess the extent of spread and determine whether this is a transient, or not fully established, pest or if it is more widely distributed. Surveys and outreach efforts to educate the local public are planned as well. Control measures and future plans for delimitation will be coordinated among CFIA, the Ministry of Ontario, and the boxwood industry.

APHIS is still evaluating the need for a Federal Order requiring certification of boxwood entering the US from Canada; however, a Pest Alert bulletin was issued to ports of entry. Surveillance and monitoring along the border in addition to entry points will be heightened. Researchers are unsure how quickly BTM will spread in the US. Box tree forests do not exist here; so, less host material may (hopefully) translate to slower or less spread.

As with many insect pests, the most destructive life stage is larvae, or caterpillars in this case. Damage is caused by larvae feeding on leaves (aesthetic damage) and bark (physiological damage). Infestations are flagged by skeletonized leaves, frass deposits, and webbing created by caterpillars for protection during feeding and pupation. Adults are moths with a wingspan of about 1.5 inches, and wings are either white with a dark brown border or brown with small, white spots.

The ideal temperature range for BTM is from 70 – 92° F, but activities are known to occur outside this range. Eggs hatch when temperatures are at least 52° F, and larvae regularly survive winter temperatures below -22° F in parts of China. Depending on temperature and light levels, two to four life cycles per year are common in the EU; each lasts around 45 days.

The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI), the AmericanHort research foundation, continues to monitor BTM as part of its ongoing Boxwood Initiative. Outreach on emerging pests and diseases is another example of how HRI helps the industry stay informed on issues impacting their bottom line.

Final Bill a Big Win for Horticulture

AmericanHort Commends Passage of Farm Bill

Final Bill a Big Win for Horticulture

AmericanHort commended Congress on Wednesday for the swift passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, which cleared by overwhelming bipartisan votes in both the House and Senate this week. The Senate voted 87-13 on Tuesday while the House passed the legislation by a 369-47 vote this afternoon. The bill now awaits the President’s signature to be enacted into law and will be in effect until 2023.

“This Farm Bill is a monumental win for the horticulture industry. Through provisions such as increased funding for research programs, sustained commitments to help our industry deal with pest and disease threats, improved intellectual property options, and research & development for better greenhouse crop insurance – this Farm Bill has it all. We commend leadership of both the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, along with party leadership, on getting this bill done and delivering for our industry,” said AmericanHort senior vice president Craig Regelbrugge.

Some top highlights in the Farm Bill:

· Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI): Allows for specialty crops to compete for the full $80 million per year for specialty crop research. This was achieved by moving $25 million in dedicated citrus industry funding, which was previously taken from the overall funding, into a separate trust fund. The new provisions provide a $125 million increase over current law for the new five-year Farm Bill.

· Specialty Crop Block Grants: Provides continued funding at $85 million a year. This represents a significant increase in total funding for the program over the five-year lifespan of the Farm Bill from $375 million to $425 million. The legislation also works to help ease existing hurdles in current law that have made the funding of marketing and multi-state projects more difficult.

· Pest and Disease: Maintains FY2018 funding at $75 million per year for pest and disease prevention and mitigation initiatives. Overall this is an increase of $50 million over the life of the 2018 Farm Bill. It also reauthorizes the National Clean Plant Network, which protects key sectors from pathogen threats by providing access to pathogen-tested accessions of the newest varieties of tree fruit, berry, roses, and other high-value horticultural crops.

· Greenhouse Crop Insurance: Initiates research and development into potential expansion/improvement of greenhouse crop insurance coverage.

Other key provisions worthy of mention include expanded plant intellectual property rights options for plant breeders, as well as language throughout the research title to ensure prioritization of research into labor-saving mechanization and automation in various USDA programs.

“Passing the Farm Bill was a critical priority for our organization in 2018, as grassroots action and lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C. played a big part in the success of this effort. AmericanHort members and grassroots partners sent hundreds of emails to their elected officials while our advocacy team engaged directly with lawmakers and staff via joint efforts with the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance,” said AmericanHort director of government relations, Tal Coley. “We look forward to building off the success of its passage and allowing the industry to access and use the resources which it contains.”

I look forward to getting around this beautiful state to meet our outstanding faculty, staff, students, and alumni. I am keen to establish new relationships throughout Washington, and to build upon existing relations with our devoted stakeholders and supporters.”

Leading researcher

For nearly two decades, Wright has been developing strategies to increase the efficiency of nutrient utilization in livestock and to raise the level of production of food in an ecologically sustainable way. Much of his effort has focused on reducing the enteric methane produced by cattle during the digestive process.

Several years ago, Wright expanded his research interests to also include human gut microbiology. He uses next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics to examine the gut microbiome of animals, including humans, to better understand the interactions between host genetics and immune responses with their gut microbiota, which are largely unexplored.

Wright has published 104 peer-reviewed papers, contributed 18 book chapters, presented 98 conference papers and delivered 34 plenary lectures in 10 countries. He serves on several national boards and has served on review panels for the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Agriculture and NASA. He has also served as an external scientific reviewer for the governments of Canada, Russia, Kazakhstan, Scotland and Switzerland.

In 2008, a new species of ciliated protozoa, Apokeronopsis wrighti, was named after Wright in recognition of his contributions to microbiology.

Earlier career achievements

Before joining UA in 2014, Wright was professor and chair of the Department of Animal Science at the University of Vermont and director of the Vermont Dairy Center of Excellence. Earlier in his career he served as a faculty member at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Canada, and at the University of Queensland and Murdoch University in Australia. He also was a research scientist for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SCIRO) in Australia.

Wright earned his doctorate and master’s degrees in zoology at the University of Guelph and completed a bachelor’s degree in biology at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada.

Provost praises dean and search committee

Bernardo thanked CAHNRS dean Ron Mittelhammer for his leadership the past four years, and also praised the efforts of the dean’s search advisory committee.

“I would be remiss not to extend my sincere gratitude to Dr. Mittelhammer for his steadfast leadership and for the numerous roles he has served since my departure from CAHNRS four years ago,” Bernardo said. “And the search advisory committee and chair Mike Trevisan also deserve special recognition for their tireless efforts to ensure a strong finalist pool.”

The College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences

CAHNRS is one of WSU’s largest colleges. It includes 16 academic units, four research and extension centers and 40 county and tribal extension offices across the state. CAHNRS consists of about 1,200 faculty and staff and enrolls nearly 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students annually.

The college’s research advances a safe and abundant food supply; promotes sustainability of agricultural and economic systems; supports energy innovations; encourages careful stewardship of natural resources and ecological systems; and enhances the well-being of individuals, families and communities.

In 2016, CAHNRS secured research funding exceeding $83 million, accounting for more than 40 percent of WSU’s total extramural research funding.

Farwest Show launches website, early registration

Wilsonville, Oregon (June 13, 2018) – “Meet me there” is the theme for the 2018 Farwest Show — and with a compelling range of dynamic speakers, career-boosting events and quality exhibitors, green industry professionals of every stripe will discover plenty of reasons to attend.

“The excitement is building for this year’s show,” said Allan Niemi, director of events for show producers the Oregon Association of Nurseries. “We know attendees and exhibitors will find it time well spent when they ‘meet us here’ to learn, network, see great plant material, and take away knowledge and ideas to improve professionally and personally.”

To help green industry professionals plan their show experience, Farwest 2018 has launched a revamped website at www.FarwestShow.com. There they can peruse speaker and event info, find an official show hotel at event rate, and even take advantage of discounted early bird registration (available until July 31). The redesigned and streamlined website has a clean, colorful design, easy to navigate on a mobile device or desktop computer. It is packed with information about show features, speakers and events.

Several of the nursery industry faces who will be exhibiting at the show are featured in the website graphics, but there’s only one way to see them all — and that’s to attend. There are several registration packages available to fit a variety of schedules and needs. For details, log on to www.FarwestShow.com/reigster. Information for prospective exhibitors is at www.farwestshow.com/exhibitor-sign-up.

“Farwest has a strong tradition, but at the same time, we update the show each year to keep pace and relevance with the dynamics of an ever-changing industry,” Niemi said. “With all the new and improved features and events we have planned, there’s no reason not to ‘meet us there’ and explore everything that Farwest has to offer.”

Horticultural Researchers Recognized for Collaborative Water Quality and Conservation Work

WASHINGTON, DC and COLUMBUS, OH—August 23, 2017— A USDA Multi-state Working Group with research focused on water conservation and improved water quality within the ornamental crops industry is the national recipient of the 2017 Experiment Station Section Award for Excellence in Multistate Research.

The collaboration includes 31 researchers and 22 institutions across the nation. Nineteen members have served as principal investigators on 41 grants totaling more than $21.6 million from USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) and other sources. Many of these efforts started with seed grants from the Horticulture Research Institute.

The award, given by the Experiment Station Committee on Organization and Policy, recognizes researchers who are conducting sustained, exemplary multistate activities and enhance the visibility of the multistate program. The working group is made up of researchers and extension agents from leading land grant universities and USDA-ARS units throughout the United States.

Water conservation and water quality are high priorities in the national ornamental plant industries because nearly all greenhouse crops and roughly three-quarters of nursery crops rely on irrigation.

“Drought, population changes, competition for water resources and new legislation increase the need to manage water resources more effectively and to investigate alternative sources for irrigation,” said Doug Buhler, director of MSU AgBioResearch, who nominated the project for the award. “In the nine years since its inception, this project addresses the interrelated issues regarding water management and water quality within the ornamental crop industries.”

Some key accomplishments of the project include:

· Creating management strategies to address the decreasing availability and quality of water for irrigation in the ornamental plant industries.

· Investigating water conservation methods and improving nutrient management practices to reduce usage and reduce impacts on runoff water quality.

· Discovering ways to reuse water or return clean water to the surrounding water systems. Concerns include agrichemicals, abiotic and biotic factors, substrate and nutrient management, and environmental, economic and social issues.

· Developing appropriate management strategies to mitigate urban environmental situations that degrade water resources.

The national winning project will be recognized by the Experiment Station Committee on Organization and Policy and USDA NIFA administrators during the Association of Public Land-grant Universities annual meeting in November in Washington, D.C.

The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI), the research affiliate of AmericanHort, has provided over $7 million in funds since 1962 to research projects covering a broad range of production, environmental, and business issues important to the green industry. Providing seed money for projects like these is an example of how HRI leverages funds from additional sources to guide and enhance research relevant to the horticultural industry. Over $10 million is committed to the endowment by individuals, corporations, and associations.

WASHINGTON, DC and COLUMBUS, OH—January 19, 2017—The Horticultural Research Institute, the research foundation of AmericanHort, is pleased to announce the release of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Bee Health in the Horticultural Industry.

BMPs are intended to inform horticultural professionals about the green industry's impact on bee health. Through the use of BMP guidelines, horticulture can continue to play an important role in pollinator health.

In 2015, the Horticultural Research Institute recognized the need for sound research to develop best production and management practices, educate, and empower the green industry. HRI, in collaboration with AmericanHort, continues to directly fund and leverage research to refine science-based guidance on horticultural practices and protecting bee and pollinator health. As part of the broad-based Horticulture Industry Bee & Pollinator Stewardship Initiative that includes industry and consumer outreach and the establishment of industry best practices, HRI has directly funded four important research projects, launched the Grow Wise, Bee Smart website, and joined the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge campaign.

Jon Reelhorn, HRI President, states, "Investment in research surrounding horticulture's role in pollinator health is part of HRI's longstanding commitment to fostering new information relevant to horticultural practices, techniques, and principles. We are pleased to have developed a set of BMPs that offer specific guidance to the industry to refine their stewardship role in bee health."

Pollinators as a whole encompass a diverse population of thousands of different species, such as managed honey bees, wild bees, butterflies, birds, and bats. Protection of pollinators in general, especially bees, continues to be a major concern among the general public and within the green industry. Several culprits have been identified as factors contributing to managed honey bee losses, including Varroa mites, other pests/diseases of bees, loss of habitat and nutrition, and off-target effects of pesticides. Alternatively, wild, unmanaged bee populations are most greatly affected by landscape changes and habitat degradation.

HRI developed the BMPs, which cover greenhouse and nursery production, woody ornamentals, and managed landscapes, with the assistance of researchers and apiarists throughout North America. Updates to these recommendations will be made as additional research results regarding bee and pollinator health are released.
First established by the American Nursery & Landscape Association in conformance with procedures specified by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), this important resource presents a standardized system of sizing and describing plants to facilitate orderly trade in nursery stock. For years, the Standard has provided buyers and sellers of nursery stock with a common terminology in order to facilitate commercial transactions. The Standard is periodically revised to meet the changing needs of the industry.

The Standard is often referenced in commercial transactions among growers, distributors, garden centers, and landscape installers. It covers topics such as measuring plants, specifying and stating the size of plants, determining the proper relationship between height and caliper, or height and width, and determining whether a root ball or container is large enough for a particular size plant.

Posted online February 8, 2016 Regional Contacts Phone: 1-800-435-5883

Washington – Christopher Mertz, NW Regional Director

2014 NW Region’s Horticulture Value of Sales at 1.38 Billion, increased 15 percent from 2009. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released the 2014 Census of Horticultural Specialties report, which shows that U.S. horticulture operations sold a total of $13.8 billion in floriculture, nursery and specialty crops in 2014, up 18 percent since 2009. The number of horticulture operations in the United States increased 8 percent during this time to 23,221.

“This report contains the results of the tenth Census of Horticultural Specialties,” said Chairman of the Agricultural Statistics Board Mark Harris. “First conducted in 1889, the horticulture census provides data on industries for which there are no other comprehensive data sources. It is a valuable tool to highlight the contribution horticulture growers bring to state-level economies – whether in sales earned or expenses paid for hired labor.”

Horticulture production was concentrated in 10 states which accounted for 65 percent of all U.S. horticulture sales in 2014. California ($2.88 billion), Florida ($1.80 billion) and Oregon ($932 million) led the nation in sales. All operations that reported producing and selling $10,000 or more of horticultural crops on the 2012 Census of Agriculture were included in this special study.

Alaska showed a 35 percent increase on the total number of operations reporting horticultural specialty crops sold between 2009 and 2014, while total sales increased 65 percent to $16.8 million. Idaho showed a 6 percent increase on the total number of operations reporting horticultural specialty crops sold between 2009 and 2014, while total sales decreased 11 percent to $67.4 million.

Idaho ranked third in the United States in vegetable seed sales. Oregon showed an 8 percent increase on the total number of operations reporting horticultural specialty crops sold between 2009 and 2014, while total sales increased 12 percent to $932 million.

Oregon ranked first in the United States in cut Christmas tree sales and second in vegetable seed sales. It also ranked third in cut flower sales, nursery stock sales, flower seed sales, and cut cultivated green sales.

Washington showed a 14 percent increase on the total number of operations reporting horticultural specialty crops sold between 2009 and 2014, while total sales increased 31 percent to $366 million. Washington ranked second in the United States in cut flower sales, rhizomes, and tuber sales.

GRANT OPPORTUNITY: The DNR Urban and Community Forestry Program

The DNR Urban and Community Forestry Program offers financial assistance to cities, towns, counties, tribal governments, educational institutions, and 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations in Washington State.

All forms of financial assistance, their availability in a given year, and their associated dollar amounts are dependent on continued funding through annual grant allocations from the USDA Forest Service. In addition, the nature and timing of the application processes are subject to change from year to year.

The following is an overview of our financial assistance programs in more detail:

Community Forestry Assistance (CFA) Grants (download the RFP and Grant Application)

Acceptable projects should focus on urban forestry program development or innovative programs that educate staff, the public and decision-makers about the benefits of trees and/or proper tree care and management. Examples include but are not limited to: developing urban forestry management plans, tree ordinances, policy manuals, tree canopy analyses, website development, and curriculum development. Match (in-kind or financial) is required.

Tree Inventory Grants (download the RFP and Grant Application)

Tree inventories are a critical tool for urban forest management. A public tree inventory will be performed on behalf of successful applicant communities by a qualified consultant through a contractual agreement with DNR. No money changes hands, however a Memorandum of Understanding between DNR and successful applicants is required. Successful communities must provide a report that describes an expected course of action toward community forest management to UCF within one year of receiving the inventory data.

Tree Planting Grants (download the RFP and Grant Application)

These grants are only available to communities who have earned the Tree City USA Award, as this designation is a minimum measure of cities’ capacity, expertise, and commitment to ensure that trees are properly planted and cared for. A 3-year maintenance plan and planting inspections by an ISA Certified Arborist are required. Match (in-kind or financial) is required.

Arbor Day Tree Reimbursements (download the Reimbursement Form)

Communities who have earned the Tree City USA designation can be reimbursed for the costs, or a portion thereof, associated with planting landscape-sized trees at their annual Arbor Day celebration. Some restrictions apply. Documentation of costs and activities is required. Match (in-kind or financial) is required.

Scholarships*

Professional scholarships may occasionally be made available for our constituents to attend local, regional, or national conferences, workshops, seminars, or training classes.

Internships*

Internships may occasionally be made available for students pursuing studies or research projects in urban and community forestry in Washington.
