10:50-11:50am Marketing is NOT a Four-Letter Word! This lively presentation will assist the participants to understand how they can use their current customer lists to increase traffic on-line or in the door. Learn how to increase customer loyalty, use free services to discover what current and potential customers want, and list-building techniques for various types of mailings. Finally, learn how to enhance search engine results without incurring costs or, alternately, whether to have a web site. Susan L. Harrington, Labyrinth Hill. Harrington shares her simple resources that took Labyrinth Hill Lavender sales from the Kingston Farmers Market to the New York City Ballet and every state in the Union without adding employees or hiring a consultant.
Noon - Luncheon Speaker - Northwest Horticulture: The Past was Prologue. Traces the steps of botanists and plant explorers who had introduced dozens of northwest natives into our evolving horticulture and developed choice landscape ornamentals right here in the Pacific Northwest. Speaker: Kathy Mendelson.
2-3pm National Clean Plant Network. Mr. Howell details efforts to secure federal support for a program to assist in providing plants for planting that are free of pests and pathogens. Bill Howell, Manager of the National Virus-tested Fruit Tree Collection assisting nurseries and other interested parties in securing virus-free propagation sources of Malus, Pyrus, and Prunus for nursery production and for international distribution. 3:30-4:30pm WSNLA Caucus Breakout Session. WSNLA caucuses will discuss legislative, regulatory, and promotional issues concerning individualized market segments. Caucus representatives will be selected.

Learn the importance of managing inventory correctly, and the impact this has on your operations cash flow. Miles McCoy, owner of Sustainable Hort LLC, and co-owner with Carla Laurent, of Always Marketing, a green industry-marketing firm. He spent over a decade with the Oregon Association of Nurseries, directing marketing and communications and later as Director of Operations. He then served as Project Coordinator and Marketing Director for the launch of the Oregon Garden, and now writes for many leading industry trade publications and for his own website and blog, sustainablehort.com, focusing on the research, expanding products and new technologies in sustainable horticulture.
Noon Awards Luncheon. The Awards Luncheon honors WSNLA members and leaders for their involvement during the past year. Awards announced are: Member of the Year, Educator of the Year, Young Member of the Year, Supplier of the Year, Environmental Excellence Award, and the WSNLA Pioneer Awards.
4-5pm Customer Service Part 2: Professional communication and selling skills; Selling vs. order taking; Telephone skills; Dealing with difficult customer and complaints. Beau Hamilton, Hamilton company, has consulted with hundreds of corporate clients throughout the US and Canada. Small group consultations on use of catalogs; different printing and style options; content options; and the design for impact and ease of use.pre registration required. Carla Laurent, co-owner of Always Marketing, clients include wholesale nurseries, garden centers, suppliers and landscape contractors. She has been the marketing director for Timber Press, a leading horitcultural publisher, Northwest Shade Trees, the specimen tree operation of J. Frank Schmidt & Son. She implements suggested marketing strategies through dynamic advertising, catalogs, newsletters, tradeshow booths and designing dynamic websites. Pre registration required.
4-5pm Collections Begin with the Sale. Collecting from past due customers is not only an irritation, it can be costly. This session discusses how to protect yourself at the time of the sale, writing letters that don’t get you in trouble, making effective collection calls, and using the courts to recover on late accounts. Bill Stine is a sales and collections associate with Cash Flow Management, Inc., of Portland, Oregon. He has conducted collection training for over 25 years for companies in the northwest. His background includes managing collection and litigations for Dun & Bradstreet, NACM Oregon, Inc., GE Capital Leasing, and Dex Media, Inc.
