CHAPTER REPORTS
Certified Arborist Mike Juneau presented an exceptional program at our March meeting. One of the keys to success with trees is to select an appropriate tree for the site (right plant, right place) and to plant it properly. The planting hole should be shallow and wide, with tapered sides. Diameter should be at least three times the diameter of the root ball. Check the root ball and remove any excess soil - the root flare should not be covered by soil. Cut and spread circling roots, especially stem-girdling roots. You can be fairly aggressive with this and cut roots which are up to one quarter of the diameter of the trunk. Plant the tree so that the root flare is not covered by soil. Planting too deep can cause stem-girdling roots to develop. Mulch around the tree and water regularly while the tree is becoming established.
When landscaping or constructing around established trees identify and fence off the critical root zone before construction starts. A zone of 5 times the DBH (Diameter at Breast Height) of the tree is usually sufficient to keep a tree standing unless the soil is very shallow. Do not store materials, pile soil or drive machinery in the critical root zone and do not make any grade changes there. If tree roots are damaged during construction be sure to help the tree along by watering and mulching.
One of the most exceptional aspects of this program were the samples. None of us had ever seen such a wide array of examples of girdling roots, included bark, and root rots! Mike and his samples will be back for the April meeting. Come take a look! |
