Jobs Nursery
Eastern Washington's Job's Nursery Sells Roses to the Growing Tri-Cities Area June 2008 - Pacific Coast Nurseryman. by Kathleen Pyle, Managing Editor. Job's Nursery in Pasco, Washington, is a fourth generation family tree farm and retail nursery just north of the Columbia Gorge. Owners Kathy and Duane Job get teased a lot about living in the "hinterlands" when they attend the Washington State Nursery and Landscape convention every year. But the truth is, business is thriving due to explosive growth in the Tri-Cities area of Kennewick, Pasco and Richard. And, the mid-Columbian area is a great place to grow roses. The Job's rose selling strategy involves opening the window a little wider on both ends of the season. Their biggest season is still spring, but they also promote roses along with trees, shrubs and perennials for fall planting. For the past 20 years, the family has also overwintered the previous year's holdover roses in a cool greenhouse that gives them a jumpstart on leafing out for the next spring.
The Job's son Alex manages the retail side of the nursery, with Duane overseeing the tree farm along with his other son. Arthur, who has recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq with the Marines. Altogether, nine family members are invovled in running the nursery business started by Duane's grandfather, in 1940. The nursery staff extends to the family menagerie of two dogs, a cat and a flock of 15 peacocks in charge of pest control.
