Landscaping Tips

Proper Planting

After you've carefully planned your water-wise landscape, you will begin planting. Just as important as selecting the perfect plant for the ideal location, is proper handling and planting technique. Careful planting will ensure that the plants root properly. Following are a few guidelines to follow when planting.

  • Keep the root system moist until you begin plating

  • Soak the roots in water before planting

  • Be sure to remove all strings, twine, and paper maché before planting

  • Dig your hole large enough to accommodate the entire root system

  • Place the plant in the hole at the same level, or slightly higher, as it was planted at the nursery

  • Spread the roots gently

  • If the roots are woody, cut or slash them lightly

  • Backfill using native soil

  • Construct a basin to retain water

  • Water immediately after planting
