Winter's Come And Gone: A Lullaby

A contemporary American folk song that spans the generations. Follow the verses beyond the rain and snow, sing your sorrows to the birds and receive their reassurance that, "Winter's Come and Gone, a little bird told me so."

Our innovative design utilizes a culturally sensitive plant palette, permeable paving, recycled glass, and a living wall. It embraces the dream of spring from the window sill of a childs playhouse through the timber framed arbor and themed gates. It would be a welcome sight anywhere in the Pacific Northwest.

Q&A With the 2012 NW Flower & Garden Show Garden Designer
Gregory Smaus talks song selection and why it's a perfect song for our times.

What song is the garden based on?
"Winter’s come and gone" by Gillian Welch

Why was this song selected?
I love this song. I’ve sung it a half million times to my daughter as a lullaby. It is so sad and so inspiring, like life. I feel it teaches us to acknowledge hardship and practice compassion. It allows us to feel the pain in life and to look beyond it to a more positive future. It’s a perfect song for our times.

How will the garden bring the song to life?
I tried to design the garden as a direct interpretation of the song lyrics. Drawing from the "Old-time" style and Americana genre of the song I created three distinct garden scenes, representing the three verses of the song. They are all part of an overall garden but each has its own simple entry gate and distinctive physical features mentioned in the song. Some were much more difficult than others; my goal was to stay true to the song, to create something aesthetically beautiful and emotional.

Winter's Come and Gone
by Gillian Welch

Oh little red bird
Come to my window sill
Been so lonesome
Shaking that morning chill
Oh little red bird
Open your mouth and sing
Been so lonesome
Just about flown away

So long now I’ve been out
In the rain and snow
But winter’s come and gone
A little bird told me so

Oh little blue bird
Pearly feather breast
Five cold nickels all I got left
Oh little blue bird
What am I gonna do
Five cold nickels
Ain’t gonna see me through

So long now I’ve been out
In the rain and snow
But winter’s come and gone
A little bird told me so

Oh little black bird
On my wire line
Dark as trouble
In this heart of mine
Poor little black bird
Sings a worried song
Dark as trouble ‘Til winter’s come and gone

So long now I’ve been out
In the rain and snow
But winter’s come and gone
A little bird told me so

So long now I’ve been out
In the rain and snow
But winter’s come and gone
A little bird told me so
