Past WSNLA Gardens

2011 - Cook's Endeavor Returns With Treasure - Gold Medal
While illustrating a scene from ‘Stowaway’, our garden highlights botanical discoveries that were typical of Captain Cook’s voyages as well as others of that era. View a scene where Joseph Banks and company landed on a plant hunting expedition and see the wonders of this new land. A bubbling spring in a shady grotto provides the landing party with a vital commodity for sea voyages – water. Recent horticultural finds are drying in the sun while waiting to be documented in journals, then packed for the journey home. Bold leaves and colors capture attention on the sunny side. While inspired by historic voyages, the garden includes plant material from many different continents, climate zones and topographies. The garden demonstrates the design principles of correct placement for microclimates.

2010 – There’s No Place Like Home -
"IF I EVER GO LOOKING FOR MY HEART’S DESIRE AGAIN, I WON’T LOOK ANY FURTHER THAN MY OWN BACKYARD."
The theme of The Wizard Of Oz was chosen because we felt that the message of this story echoes in the everyday lives of most of us today. We are using the symbolic meaning of plant names, objects, artwork, and spaces in the garden to connect the visitors to the story. The plants were carefully chosen to fit with the theme and function of each garden area. As people, during these changing times there are three important attributes from the Oz characters we aspire to fulfill. From the Tin Man, HEART - a lovely garden sanctuary, place of peace, nourishing body & spirit. From the Scarecrow, INTELLIGENCE - making informed choices to live lightly on the earth, conserve & protect our limited resources: soil, water, & air. From the Cowardly Lion, COURAGE - simplifying life, prioritizing choices, & taking steps to find our way home. The path to a better future includes sustainable practices: ‘Low Impact Development’ methods, rain gardens, green roofs, living walls, pervious pavement, low-volume irrigation, recycling, composting and organic gardening. Our structures and garden spaces include these features in a playful, whimsical, and innovative way. This truly is a garden an average urban family can enjoy!

2009 - Reclaim, Recreate, Rejuvenate - Crystal Medal
Satisfaction in a garden space involves creative and fun elements,
a reflection of the personality of the gardener. Using your imagination, ordinary and re-purposed household items can take on a second life. The garden becomes a relaxing escape where reading a good book in a natural setting, or planting bulbs to add color to your garden, are equally gratifying. This space is a blend of old and new, synthetic and natural. Where water is valued and conserved. A setting that provides a place for both people and animals to co-exist in the harmonious suspension of time and place.

2008 – Sommarstuga: Summer Living Simply & Sustainably - Gold Medal
Sunset Western Living Award
Founders Cup Award
"Sommarstuga", is the Swedish tearm for a summer cottage. Like the Northwest, Sweden has short summers and long summer days. Swedes often spend their summers in simple, airy cottages with few of the amenities typical of a Western lifestyle though such a retreat might sit on an island in the Stockholm archipelago, it could just as easily straddle rocks on a Northwest promontory. Screened by a backdrop of trees, the birding enthusiasts in our cottage savors summer – and the sun – amid clusters of largely low-water-use plants, while helping the plants – and the planet – by providing healthy soil and deep, slowly delivered irrigation. Wherever it sits, a Sommarstuga is an icon of summer living.

2007 – Suburban Swank With A Twist - Bronze Medal
Seattle Homes & Lifestyles 'First in Residential Garden Design' Award.
People's Choice Award - Arboretum Foundation Gala
In 1937, three landscape architecture students were kicked out of Harvard for rejecting the formalism of Beaux Arts. The trio pioneered designs that fused indoor and outdoor spaces and encouraged alfresco entertaining. By the 1950’s, no suburban backyard was without its requisite patio. Our garden celebrates this legacy and adds a contemporary twist. A swank patio bar stocked with garnishes from the garden, citrus bright colors and 21st century materials: a refreshing blend of retro and mod. Please inquire if products and plant material used in this garden are for sale.

2006 – It Looks Like Red to Me: Seeing Red with the Green Industry
BRICK, RUST, WINE, APPLE, ROSE. How many ways can you say ‘red’? How many ways can you see ‘red’? With an emphasis on plant form and structure, our horticulturists look at ‘red’ in the garden, reinterpret it and give it a Northwest flavor. Just think Gertrude Jekyll’s white Garden with sass; private; personal, lively. We invite you into our backyard to experience the full spectrum of ‘red’. We won’t forget the flowers but look around and see so much more that’s ‘red’ in the garden.
